Synopsis[]
Donald Na thinks of himself as an abandoned dog in the middle of a field. He must survive, must get stronger, and must look stronger. No matter what, he must rise to the top.
Five years ago, Donald Na is twelve years old and a fourth grader. He wakes up beside his mom, who is hospitalized. He tells his mom that she should’ve woken him up, but she says he was sleeping so calmly. His mother asks how school is and Donald says that it’s fun and that the work-study students will be supported by the school until the end of high school. He also says that his stepfather’s been pretty nice to him.
Donald’s mother apologizes because she won’t be able to see Donald as a high schooler. She is relieved that he’ll be funded until the end of high school. She gives Donald a chocolate bar with a handwritten letter telling him to cheer up. The only time Donald can be a little boy like his peers were during the short visits he has with his mom. The hospital is far away so he could only visit when he has enough money for the bus.
Donald heads home and at night, his stepfather arrives. His stepfather is upset that Donald’s home and asks him if he has some money left over. Donald has none after the bus fare but if he told the truth, he’d get beaten. In the past, he previously didn’t tell his stepfather the answer he wanted so that he’d beat him instead of his mom. Since his mom is safe at the hospital, Donald lies and says he does have money. His stepfather tells him to leave and come back in the morning.
Donald is able to bear through the cold and tiredness. He realizes that he left the chocolate his mom gave him in his bag at home and stops in front of a bakery. Since the security cameras are broken and no one is around, Donald breaks into the bakery to eat some bread. Donald often looks over at the skyrise buildings and sees them as castles that sat above the skies. When the time is closer to day than night, Donald is able to sleep in an empty house.
Donald’s stepfather wakes him up and tells him to fetch the money the school gives Donald. Donald is the recipient of Yeowon Elementary School’s Work-Study Student Scholarship and Grant Program. The conditions to be a grant recipient are to have a parent who is either disabled or receiving critical medical support and to be working as a student.
Donald is reading a book while working the printer when Bully #1 steals his book. Donald chases after him and Bully #2 kicks Donald from behind and sends him to the floor. Bully #3 throws Donald’s book into the trash can. The bullies mock him for being a work-study student and tell him that he stinks. When Donald leaves his hellish home to go to school, he’s greeted by a different hell.
