Weak Hero Wiki

This is the afterword of Weak Hero.

Seopass' Afterword

Hello, readers. Seopass here. Weak Hero is finally complete.

I’ve been so busy working against the clock every week that it still feels like I’m doing the first storyboarding…but five years have already flown by. The only change has been going from drawing analog (paper and pen/pencil) in 2018 to digital in 2023.

I avoided adding any unnecessary commentary during that time in case it would get in the way of story immersion, but now that the story is complete, I’d like to share a few things about Weak Hero. It took a long time to decide on the title.

Not being a very good speaker or writer, I remember expressing myself through storyboards being easiest for me. It began with the simple ideas “Wouldn’t this kind of webtoon be really entertaining?” and “Let’s make a webtoon that I’d like to read.” “A nerdy fighter…hey, that sounds like it’d be pretty interesting!”

So I drew the storyboard whenever I had some free time while keeping my full-time job. It was a story about a boy who stood up to immense violent forces by overcoming his weakness however he could with his intellect and tools. “Winning is everything.”

It began with Stephen…and expanded with his friends and the Union members…and the larger picture was complete once I had fleshed out the look and the meaning of the final villain. There were some hiccups, but Weak Hero finally began serialization in 2018.

But I ran into a lot of hurdles as soon as it began. I could never have foreseen any of it, and I remember struggling a lot at the time. “The cold, unforgiving world of adults! Fatal injuries left and right!” So I decided to give up the other stuff and focus on the story and storyboard. After all, the only way I could shine in the midst of so many great series was study and hard work. So I pushed through serialization by making up for whatever I lacked with tons of research and thinking.

I’d started the serialization without much thought… “Hey, it’ll be fine as long as I’m entertained!” But things just seemed to get more difficult and the series progressed. But despite all these deficiencies, the series received so much generous love. None of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for that love. Thank you.

I’m certain that many readers were disappointed as the story got closer to the end. I think I’d confined myself too much in my attempt to be faithful to my original story and the feelings they were supposed to evoke. I eventually realized that I’d overlooked how much more personal the relationship between comics and the readers had become in the modern age. And I spent a lot of time in painful self-reproach.

But in the end, I have to embrace the ending and the final outcome, in spite of my deficiencies as a creator. I hope my readers are able to understand, as the affection I feel toward this series that I’ve spent so many years thinking about is like that of a parent toward its child. It is my sincere hope that each of my readers’ favorite scene remains in their memories for a long time to come. I am well aware of how many readers were upset or disappointed with the ending.

And now, after working on such a long series, the creator team is in need of a break. (Seopass suffered from kidney stones and someone on the team (Razen?) suffered from a herniated disk.)

As for a sequel…I can’t give a concrete answer yet, but our readers can be sure that I’d like to do it if possible, especially as our health and situations improve. So be sure to check the creator pages for any updates.

So many people worked very hard to make Weak Hero possible. I’d like to thank everyone at Webtoon who gave me a chance and pulled for me, as well as Jaedam Media and its producers that worked hard to help us meet the final deadlines, and Razen, the face of Weak Hero, who was responsible for its beautiful art. Thank you so much.

And then there are the kids who I literally thought about every single day during the last five years, such that it feels like they should be in my phone contacts. (Jimmy would treat Seopass like a bread shuttle.)

Gray, Big Ben, Gogo, Gerard, Eugene, Teddy, Rowan, The Guy with the Glasses, Phillip, Colton, Donald, Kingsley, Dongha, Seongmok, Jimmy, Jack, Goseon, Harper, Hugo, Wolf, Hwangmo, Hayden, Jared, Jake, Dean, Naksung, Eunchan, Timothy, Myles, Forrest, Grape, Robin, Stephen, Bryce, Oswald, Hyeonjin, Changhui, Juwon, Giju, Doyun, Jaeryeong…and the rest of the cast of Weak Hero, I’d like to thank them all.

And finally, I’d like to sincerely thank all the readers who stuck with Weak Hero to the end despite its shortcomings. With overwhelming gratitude, thank you! You were all a great help, from the generous encouragement and support, to even the criticism. I promise to work harder and learn more to improve as a creator.

I was truly happy during my time on the stage that I’d wanted to be on so badly. And I wish all my readers happiness. Take care, everyone! Goodbye!

Razen's Afterword

Hello, readers. Artist Razen here.

The last five years I spent working on Weak Hero felt like climbing over a large mountain. There were many difficult moments as I passed several peaks and valleys, but looking back, I realize they were all happy times. Being able to spend those five years with the readers that gave the series so much love and appreciation was such a meaningful and happy experience.

To my wife and child, who give me their constant love and support, to Seopass, the brains behind Weak Hero who taught me so much as a professional, to my amazing colleagues, who are like family—Jeongmin, Hojeong, and Subeom who coordinated with me over the years to meet the deadlines, no matter what difficulties arose, to the Jaedam Media Fam who worked so hard for every deadline so that Weak Hero could shine, to those at Webtoon who gave us this amazing chance, and the awesome fans who would blow me away with their incredible fanart whenever it was a character’s birthday…It would be impossible to list everyone, but I’m so grateful to you all.

And finally, I’d like to give a chance to some of the characters that didn’t make the final chapters of the series to say one last farewell.

THANK YOU!

Trivia

  • Many readers were upset because they waited a month and thought it was going to be an epilogue or a side-story, not an afterword. They even called it an "epilogue" at the end of Chapter 267.
  • The Indonesian version translates all of Seopass' notes on the storyboards, but the English keeps them as Korean. Cheongang's heights are reveals:
    • Changhui is 184 cm tall
    • Gijoo is 176 cm tall
    • Doyoon is 187 cm tall
    • Joowon's height is never listed
  • In the Indonesian version, in the storyboard panel of Donald pinning Changhui down with a table, "한 (han)" is used to label the character being pinned down. The Indonesian version translated it as "Sehan" as in Forrest Lee when it is supposed to be Changhui Han. With how much the Indonesian fandom hates Forrest, this might have been intentional.
